Puddles were the best — better than a bag of army men, better than the anthill behind the garage, and even better than that giant cardboard box the refrigerator came in. Maybe they didn’t come with men in six different shooting positions, or tickle when they crawled over your finger, or have room enough for all five of us to pile into and slide down the hill, but they had one thing none of those others had — they were more than just a toy.

Rain came softly from the west, tapping on the window. Somewhere beyond the woods a jagged vein of lightning stretched downward from the clouds, and muffled thunder rattled the screen, waking Sam. I was already at the window watching the storm. I couldn’t get the Pink Lady out of my head.
